El Born is Barcelona’s most fashionable neighborhood, but it is also one of its oldest. In the medieval era, this district housed the city’s guilds, with each street named after the craft practiced there (e.g., Carrer dels Sombrerers for hatmakers, Carrer dels Flassaders for blanket weavers).
The Church of the People
While tourist guides direct everyone to the grand Cathedral of Barcelona, locals prefer Santa Maria del Mar. Built in the 14th century by the local dockworkers and stone-carriers (bastaixos), it was constructed in a record-breaking 55 years. It is a stunning, mathematically perfect representation of Catalan Gothic architecture, with zero baroque clutter.
Hidden Plazas
Tucked away from the main boulevard is Plaça de Sant Pere. It feels like a small, quiet village square rather than a neighborhood in a major metropolis. It is the perfect place to sit under the orange trees with a cold craft vermouth and watch children play.
Scent and Leather
Born is still home to outstanding artisans. Visit the studio of Fusta d’Herba, an organic apothecary making custom perfumes inspired by Mediterranean pine and rosemary, or explore La Manual Alpargatera, the workshop that has been crafting traditional Catalan esparto-grass alpargatas (espadrilles) since the 1940s.
